If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there…

I get emails where brewers want advice on things to add to their beer… or how to make a beer recipe better…

The problem is that they don’t know what ‘better’ means?

They don’t really know what they want…

Saying that you want to brew an IPA for example is not enough…

You need to know exactly what you want from that IPA if you are to truly brew the beer that you want…

This is one of the concepts I teach in Mash Control… it goes beyond the technical aspects of brewing and focuses more on what goes on behind the scenes…

Before I put together my recipe for my Brown Porter, I sat down and figured out what I wanted the beer to be like…

I knew I wanted chocolate flavors to be complimented with subtle caramel, toffee and nutty flavors from different malts…

I figured out the type of hop characteristic I wanted and other aspects of the beer such as balance, body, etc.

Then with that in mind, I went ahead and planned the recipe and brewing process…

The result?

I got a beer pretty much as I envisioned it… below is my brown porter home brew review:
